12 5 Star Rating to Rawan Jhipan Limestone Mines For Sustainable Mine management Mr Kamlesh Kumar Chandrakar, Sr Manager Section Head - Mines Planning Rawan Cement Works, UltraTech Cement Limited, Chhattisgarh INTRODUCTION Rawan Jhipan Limestone Mine is one of the captive mines of UltraTech Cement Limited, Rawan Cement Works, located in Simga Tehsil of District Baloda Bazar - Bhatapara, Chhattisgarh. The mining activity started on 4th Feb 1994. Mining is carried out by Mechanized open-cast methods. Mines has followed Sustainable Development Framework (SDF) standards to achieve five-star ratings which are based on mining operation performance on techno, socio-economic and environmental parameters. The five-star ratings awarded to Rawan- Jhipan Limestone Mines are based on the implementation of the following parameters: • The management of impact by carrying out scientific and efficient mining. • Addressing social impacts of resettlement and rehabilitation requirements from mining activities • Local community engagements and welfare programmes • Steps taken for progressive and final mine closure and • Adoption of international standards. The star rating of mines is based on self-certification which is verified by the Apex committee constituted under the aegis of IBM. Rawan-Jhipan Limestone mines have been conferred with a 5 star rating by the Ministry of Mines , in a stringent evaluation process taken up by the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM). Mines has received a five star award in three consecutive years.
