Tips for setting a target Some hints and tips when it comes to setting a target: • Do not wait to commit: companies can already sign a commitment letter and take up to two years to develop the targets. The longer companies wait to start making emissions reductions, the steeper these reductions will have to be to meet climate goals. • Consider setting up a cross-functional team within the company to tackle all elements of setting and meeting targets, from engineering and capital investments in plants, to investor relations, communications and ESG reporting. • Socialize the concept of science-based targets at all levels within the company. • Use the science-based target setting tool to calculate the emissions reductions required. • Develop and implement procedures for collecting data and tracking progress. From the point of view of companies, the SDA has the advantage of taking into account a company’s starting point in calculating the targeted reductions needed, so concerns that a company’s emissions are higher than average should not be a barrier to setting targets. The SBTi target validation process Once a company submits its targets for process begins with an initial screening to determine if all necessary information has been provided to assess the target. The target submission is then passed to a Lead Reviewer (LR) who performs the desk review of the submission, prepares the deliverables, organizes a feedback call if necessary, and acts as the point of contact throughout the validation process.
