Figure 2: Projected global cement production under the 1.5 º C pathway Figure 3: Scope 1 intensity pathways for the global cement industry Figure 4: Scope 2 pathways for the global cement industry This scenario for cement from IEA assumes that optimization of the use of cement and concrete is a key lever to achieve absolute emissions reductions in the sector. Therefore, demand for cement The scope 1 and 2 1.5 C cement sector intensity pathways are shown in Figures 3 and 4 below, with comparison to the C pathways. (Full data can be accessed in the target-setting tool.) It should be noted that the starting-year emission intensity in the 1.5 C pathway is higher than the well-below 2 C pathway, C pathway nevertheless leads to more ambitious near- and long-term targets as it is a steeper path leading to lower residual emissions in 2050. It should also be noted that the pathways chosen conserve the 2020-2050 carbon budget for cement at the time of their development. If emissions do not decrease in line with the pathway, a new, steeper path would be needed to stay in line with the 1.5 C objective. Companies interested in setting science-based targets should encourage their peers to also set ambitious targets to avoid this risk. All 1.5 C scenarios for cement include the need for unknown or breakthrough technologies to deal with process (geogenic) emissions from cement. This is a shortcoming of all scenarios, in that the risk of not meeting the 1.5 C aim is high. Therefore, measures to mitigate this risk (that is, to ensure that there is enough investment in research and development to bring about these breakthroughs) in addition to science based target setting document. 4.
