Cement, Energy & Environment

Concluding ttle presentation Dr. Izumi proposed an outline of the implementation scheme for clean technologies in India. Dr. S.K. Handco, Advisor (Tech.), CMA made the country presentation for the Indian Cement Industry - starting with the Indian position in the global cement prod uction, the present status of the industry, the progress reduction of consumption achieved by Indian Cement Industry since the last six decades was presented. The highly energy efficient industry was highlighted through International Enerny Agency data 2011 which show India energy intensity amongst the lowest. The efforts made by the industry to achieve the target set under the BEE's PAT Scheme were brought out besides the key factors effecting the overall power consumption. The presentation also highlighted the various normalization factors which were marked for account for the impact of power mix, fuel mix, product mix, capacity utilization major product. Import/Export of power, clinker etc. to facilitate smooth implementation of the PAT Scheme for achieving the targets which workout to 0.815 Mtoe out of the total of 6.63 Mtoe (which is next to power and iron sector for which have target of 3.100 and 1.588 Mtoe respectively) from a total of 85 number of Designated Consumers in cement sector. The presentation from the other sectors from India were made by i) Mr. Avijit Pati, COO from Aluminum Sector from Vedanta Aluminum Ltd. ii) Mr. Vinod Kumar Gael, from Fertilizer Sector. iii) Dr. B.P. Thapliyal , from Pulp & Paper Sector. iv) Mr. A.K. Asthana, Sr. Technical Expert GIZ, from Thermal Power Plant. v) Dr. J.V. Rao, DG- NITRA from Textile Sector. vi) Mr. Kalathur Srinivasan, Secretary General, Alkali Manufacturers' Association of India. Mr. Miki Yamanaka from CSR & Global Environment Centre of Daikni Industries reported on interesting study carried out on Dessemination of High efficient air conditioners in India, estimating the electrical consumption by air conditions in Indian from 2011 , projection upto 2020 and potential for reducing consumption. The presentation brought out the prom1smg Technologies to achieve high energy efficient air conditioning such inverter technology and use of energy efficient refrigerator R32. Concluding his presentation Mr. Yamanaka mentioned that inverter technology can increase energy efficiency by 30% compared to non inverter. Further R32 refrigerator is 10% more energy efficient than conventional refrigerant at the same volume. When inverter and R32 refrigerator are applied to high end model, potential increase of energy efficiency will be significant. During the exchange of views of the presentation made the Japanese team sought to identify possible areas for co-operation in energy efficient AC etc and promotion of Japan smart energy product/ technology. In his concluding remarks Mr. K.K. Chakarvarti thanked to ECCJ for all the co-operation extended , mutual benefit from sharing of the knowledge and expertise development towards energy efficiency measures across the sector. Regarding the future line of action he mentioned that it shall have to be taken up with the higher authorities. THE FIRST CONFERENCE FOR CEMENT MAKERS IN IRAQ Sponsored by the Ministry of Industry and Minerals in Iraq and under the slogan "Together to build Iraq", the first conference for Cement Makers in Iraq was held on 12th February 2013 in Baghdad. The conference was attended by a large number of state officials from the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers of Iraq and the members of the House of representatives, Mr. Deputy Minister of Industry and Minerals and a large number of technicians: those concerned with economic affairs and also industrial and economic experts . The conference had wide participation of all cement procedures in Iraq from government and private sector. The conference hosted around 160 participants. Objectives of the Conference The conference aims at studying the current situation of cement manufacturing in Iraq and future prospects in light of economic openness the country witnessed in recent years. Focusing on reconstruction and modernization of infrastructure and the increase of local market needs for cement, called for the need to develop cement industry through making partnership contracts with the private sector with a view to rehabilitate and operate the plants, establish new plants through investments, study obstacles and common problems, study the effect of dumping the market with imported cement, facilitate coordination and cooperation among cement plants in Iraq, to finally submit demands and recommendations to decision makers in the state. Conference Themes 1. Cement industry in Iraq in present (and future). 2. Partnersh ip contracts as an aspect of investment in the cement industry. 51
