Cement, Energy & Environment

...... A presentation on "Low-Carbon Technology Roadmap for The Indian Cement Industry– Opportunities & Challenges" was made by Dr S. K. Handoo on 25 1 h June 2013, that was chaired by Dr. Keith R. Hall, Managing Director, Trident Engineering International (UK). The presentation brought out the specific opportunities provided by the Road Map w.r.t. Energy Efficiency, Lowering Carbon Footprint, AFR usage, higher clinker replacement with fly ash, waste heat based power generation besides adoption of newer technologies. The Presentation also highlighted the challenges thrown out by the Road Map to meet the targets fixed for various parameters upto 2050. In the above Session, two very informative presentations were made on "The 2011 Tsunami– The Story of Cement Plant" by Takayuki Suzuki , from Taiheiyo Cement Corporation, Japan, and on "Pioneering ways of managing biodiversity in time– stone quarries" by Dr Tony Whitten from Fauna & Flora International. The 2011 Tsunami Presentation highlighted how the waste collected during the Tsunami was gainfully uti lized as a material for Cement Manufacture, by the affected plant. All the presentations have been uploaded at their website, www.cemnet.com/contentl conference/asia2013/presentation. The conference was attended by about 200 delegates with participants mostly from South East Asia and including 17 from India. The Conference had also organized for 20 Exhibition stalls, representing mostly the Cement Plant Machinery Equipment Manufacturers/suppliers, Some of these from China, were also keen to further expand their services on power generation by WHR system, to Indian Cement Plants. INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ENHANCED USAGE OF ALTERNATE FUELS & RAW MATERIALS (AFR)-CO-PROCESSING IN CEMENT PLANTS This International Conference on "Enhanced Usage of Alternate Fuels & Raw Materials (AFR)- Co-Processing in Cement Plants" was successfully organized jointly by Cement Manufacturers' Association of India (CMA) & Institute for Industrial Productivity (IIP)-Wash ington DC in New Delhi during 7- 8 August 2013, to share the findings of the liP- CMA study outcome of the study carried out on developing an Action Plan towards increasing AFR usage under Phase - I, with the multi-stakeholder groups comprising Industry, Policy Makers, Regulators , Technology providers, Academia, etc. from across the world . The conference Main Theme was 'Towards Lighting of Lamps by Chief Guest Mr. B. K. Chaturvedi, Member, Planning Commission of India Achieving Sustainable Growth & Lowering Carbon Footprinf. The Conference was inaugurated by Mr. B. K. Chaturvedi, Member, Planning Commission of India, and the Keynote Address was delivered by Mr Saurabh Chandra, Secretary (DIIP), Ministry of Commerce & Industry. Mr Chaturvedi also formally released the CMA- IIP Action Plan publication titled, "Action Plan for Enhancing the Use of Alternate Fuels & Raw Materials in the Indian Cement Industry" prepared under the Phase - I of the CMA-IIP project on the subject. Keynote Address by Mr Saurabh Chandra, Secretary (01/P), Ministry of Commerce & Industry Inaugural Address by Chief Guest Mr. B. K. Chaturvedi, Member, Planning Commission of India The Action Plan is a compendium of various alternate fuels and raw materials (AFRs) relevant for Cement Industry with reference to India, with crisp information on the inventory, potential benefits and recommended action plan on each material. The AFRs identified for this purpose are hazardous waste, refuse derived fuel 47
