International Union for the Conservation of Natural Resources (IUCN), the SDF was to comprise principles, reporting initiatives and good practice guidelines. The Ministry of Mines, Government of India, in compliance of the recommendations of the Hoda committee, got developed a Sustainable Development Framework for the mining sector (non coal, non fuel) in India. The final SDF report was published on 30.11.201 1. Simultaneously, the draft Mines and Minerals (Development & Regulations) Bill, 2011 incorporates sections which require the development of SDF at National and state level, an institutional mechanism to implement the SDF and to mandate its compliance and periodic review. The SDF (a framework approach) defines as a principles that can collective progress the sector towards sustainable development by adopting a flexible and 'continual improvement' approach. These principles are:- 1. Incorporating environmental and social sensitivities in lease decisions 2. Strategic assessment in mining regions 3. Managing impacts at the mine level 4. Addressing land, resettlement and other social impacts 5. Community engagement, benefit sharing and contribution to socio-economic development 6. Mine closure and post-closure 7. Assurance and reporting Ministry of Mines, Government of India, has decided to roll-out SDF as a pilot project in the state of Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh. SMI has been nominated as a member of the committee to formulate guidelines for these pilot projects. Since the SDF approach is close to SMI's objectives can have far-reaching influence on the way mining will be done in future, SMI intends to actively contribute to these pilots. SMI has provided constructive suggestions to the committee during its first meeting held on 28-May-2008 at IBM Nagpur.
