Subsequently, IMI was rechristened Sustainable Mining Initiative (SMI) as a separate independent division of FIMI. Membership Sustainable Mining Initiative (SMI ), during its journey of four years since 2009, has moved forward to achieve its objectives by addressing the environmental and social issues related to mining in India. SMI has developed itself as an important stimulus for the inclusive and responsible growth of the industry. These ten companies are the found ing and Govern ing Council members of SMI. Subsequently, 4 more mining companies have joined SMI as Associate members by adopting the Codes of Conduct. This Report, the first after the SMI came into being, is an attempt to captu re the objective and principles of SMI, how far in the journey we have travelled, and the way forward . Objective Mining sector play a important role in meeting the ever increasing demand for minerals and metals to sustain high economic growth rate of the country. M/s M G M Minerals, Odisha (Orissa) The Governing council (GC– compnslng of the 10 founding members) meets twice an year to review the progress made in achieving the objectives of SMI and provide guidance and direction on how accelerate the process. Code of Conduct In August 2012, FIMI launched its code of conduct (CoC) for voluntary adoption by its members. The aim was to provide a framework to the mining companies and entrepreneurs to demonstrably adopt 'good behavior' and open themselves to measurement and security and, hopefully, reduce negative perceptions about the mining sector so widely prevalent today. 27
