Cement Energy Environment

50 LCA results give insight and help set priorities and define Key Performance Indicators (KPI)s that are relevant and measurable. It also helps set a baseline for the product or service in question, so any improvements or deviations can be compared to benchmarks, and progress can be monitored. Through LCA, is possible to test impacts of the circular business models, validate their assumptions and get feedback for improvement. In addition, it can help define targets and indicators to measure and foster circularity over time. Circular economy is a great vision for mobilizing businesses and governments. However, it needs proven methodologies to make sure the vision results in concrete benefits for the environment and society. LCA can complement the vision with robust measurements, helping to ensure the feasibility of implementation at a product level. The philosophy of the circular economy is linked to The current global interest in CE opens up an opportunity to make society’s consumption and production patterns more resource efficient. Assessing CE strategies requires addressing the technical and scientific challenges involved across the life cycle of such strategies, as well as the broader implications for the sustainability of both emerging and developed economies. LCA is a crucial assessment methodology to inform and improve CE strategies by comparing them in terms of sustainable performance. Even if the methodology is standardized (ISO 14040–14044: 2006), further requirements must be set to ensure comparability between LCA studies. The same strict principles must apply to compare CE strategies based on LCA. It is very well suited to assess the sustainability impacts of CE strategies. Now we already use more resources than the planet is capable of regenerating, so we must find ways to utilize less energy, water, materials, and resources in general. In the cement industry we are searching for ways to close product life cycles, whether at the outset by using renewable energy, or at the end by using recyclable materials. We need radical innovation to develop new technologies and new business models. The circular economy is part of the solution. Several methods of sustainable manufacturing in the cement industry have been evaluated in open literature in recent times and progress has been made on the research front. Techniques such as carbon capture and storage (CCS), material substitution, the use of alternative fuels and utilizing energy efficient technologies have been proposed the promotion of resource efficiency, taking into count the full lifecycle of cement and concrete from initial planning and manufacturing of cement and construction products to finally the building demolition and waste treatment and disposal. Improving the resource efficiency throughout the lifecycle of building will make construction sector more competitive as well as reduce the material use. In a world where carbon neutrality has become a political imperative and resources are finite, there is no doubt that developing circular approaches will be essential to decarbonize industries. For the cement sector, the ability to phase out fossil fuels using waste and use electricity from renewable resources like solar and wind energy and the 100 per cent recyclability of concrete, offers key advantages to cement and construction sector in future. as means of mitigating the negative environmental impact of cement production. Some firms have not fully bought into research innovations to plant scale as they are still regarded as pilot scale technologies to their conventional methods. Absorption of carbon dioxide from cement kilns by algae to generate biofuel, can partially replace fuel for same kiln and reduce release of CO 2 into atmosphere. There are number of such technology ideas available for the reduction of GHG from cement plants. Eco friendly low emission cements sometimes struggle to meet performance requirements and satisfy funding evaluators, thus it is still currently an arduous task to fully commercialize these ideas. There can be an effective circular economy, in two ways it can be planned: by raising awareness on circular economy opportunities by private sector’s engagement and identifying innovation ideas and those ideas and technology to work out with joint and collaborative efforts of cement industries, educational and R&D institutes of our nation. Government should be proactive on allocation of funds on such innovative research projects like carbon capture and sequestration. Major players of Indian cement industry have already long term self-committed road map to reduce GHG emission, targeting resource conservation and use of renewable energy.
