A CASE STUDY ON REPLACEMENT OF TRADITIONAL LIGHTS WITH LED LIGHTS AT JK WHITE CEMENT WORKS, GOTAN Introduc on Electrical energy consump on is increasing day by day and illumina on contributes a vital electric power consump on in industries all over the world. Remarkably, the majority of industrial illumina on was carried out with tradi onal i.e. incandescent, fluorescent, HPSV, HPMV and CFL lamps which consume a high level of energy in comparison with recent high efficient technologies. Recent developments in the field of light source technologies have opened up new perspec ves for sustainable and highly efficient light sources in the form of LEDs (light-emi ng diodes). In the recent years, LEDs have been increasingly used in ligh ng systems because of their low energy consump on, high energy efficiency, low maintenance cost, longevity, high light-flux efficiency and their ability to maintain the light-flux value at a constant level for a long period of me. Despite the capital cost of energy- efficient LED lamps, the use of LEDs might make economic sense for industries due to the reduc on in opera onal energy in certain stage. By replacement of conven onal ligh ng with LED, a significant reduc on in annual energy use, electricity bill, CO2 and other greenhouse gas emission in terms of ligh ng can be accomplished by industries. About Plant: J.K. White Cement Works, Gotan J.K. White Cement is India's first white cement facility and uses the dry process technology. The Gotan plant was commissioned in 1984 with an ini al produc on capacity of 50,000 tons. It uses technical exper se from F. L. Smith & Co. of Denmark and state-of-the-art technology with con nuous on-line quality control by microprocessors and X-rays, ensuring the purest white cement. Over the years, con nuous process improvements and modifica ons have increased the plant's produc on capacity to 618,000 tons per annum. Innova ve Project Replacement of tradi onal lights with LED lights in economic way with op mising E-Wastage Looking at the energy consump on, maintenance and spare inventory for illumina on which was very high, it was decided to replace the various tradi onal lights installed outdoor and indoor area with LED lights in phased manner at economic cost with considering the op misa on of genera on of E-wastage. Technical Aspects Ligh ng Sources & their efficiency In all sectors there are some commonly used light fi ngs such as incandescent light, fluorescent light, sodium vapour, mercury vapour, metal halide etc. for par cular applica on. Luminous efficacy i.e. lumen per wa for these light sources are different. Among these a number of areas is found with incandescent light as a source of ligh ng which are very inefficient from the point of view of energy efficiency. It is obvious that higher efficiency of ligh ng source will definitely reduce the energy consump on. Luminous efficacy of different light sources is listed in table below. It is seen that the luminous efficacy of the LED and CFL are at par but LED is much energy efficient due to low power consump on at the driving circuit 88 Sachin Gupta JK White Cement Works, Gotan (A division of JK Cement Ltd)
