8 18% of global energy demand by 2050. Green Hydrogen is considered a promising alternative for enabling this transition. Hydrogen can be utilized for long-term storage of renewable energy, a replacement of fossil fuels in industry, provide a way of clean transportation, and potentially also for decentralized power generation in mining, aviation, and marine transport. The National Green Hydrogen Mission was approved by the Union Cabinet on 4 January 2022, with the key objectives of targets to be achieved by 2030 - • Making India leading producer & supplier of Green Hydrogen in the world - Development of green hydrogen production capacity of at least 5 MMT per annum by 2030. • Creation of export opportunities for Green Hydrogen and its derivatives- Abatement of nearly 50 MMT of annual greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. • Reduction in reliance on imported fossil fuels and feedstock - Cumulative reduction in fossil fuel imports over Rs. One lakh crore by 2030 • Development of indigenous manufacturing capabilities • Attracting investment and business opportunities for the industry - Over Rs. Eight lakh crores in total investments by 2030. • Creating opportunities for employment and economic development - Creation of over Six lakh jobs by 2030 • Supporting R&D projects Through exports at competitive prices, India can draw a high value for its green hydrogen derivatives. Over time, this will facilitate the expansion of green hydrogen infrastructure. Several companies have declared their intentions to establish production facilities for green hydrogen and green ammonia within India. Given the initial stage of green hydrogen adoption in the country, its impact on job creation, reduction of oil dependency, and exports are yet to be concretely identified. Hydrogen A source of alternative energy for Industry Renewable energy sources such as solar & wind power have developed significantly, but they continue to pose challenges. The energy generated by these sources is subject to availability of abundant sunlight and strong winds. To replace fossil fuels & achieve decarbonization in industry segments such as mining, heavy-duty transportation, chemicals, and industry, a natural source that is available year-round is required, which is fulfilled by hydrogen energy. Hydrogen has proven itself to be versatile and plentiful for utilization in various industries. The material possesses low density and is a lightweight element, even lighter than air, presenting transportation difficulties. For ease in conveyance, hydrogen is liquified making it denser. Green hydrogen may seem like a relatively new idea, although hydrogen energy is among some of the most ancient energy sources utilized across industries. While different forms of hydrogen energy exist, including grey and blue hydrogen, the process of generating hydrogen energy through sustainable water sourcing and renewable energy sources is referred to as green hydrogen production.
