17 LC 3 cement: a solution for modern cement carbon footprint – Review V Madhusudanarao and Balakrishna G The KCP Cement Limited, Cement Unit-2, Muktyala, Jaggayyapeta, NTR District Abstract Maintaining an efficient and effective construction industry with the necessity of the present atmospheric demanding situations of the globe has put forward the need for new generation building materials manufacturing that meets the sustainable alternate development for Portland Cement. This new-generation building material has a huge impact on CO 2 emission reduction and natural resources consumption in the global construction and cement industry. Limestone and Calcinedd Clay Cement is one of the new- generation building materials and unique among Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCM) as they not only offer good properties when used in combination with cement, but are also available in huge quantities. Calcinedd clays have previously been used as pozzolans, but calcination makes the economics of substitution marginal in a conventional pozzolanic blend. Blends where calcinedd clay is used as a pozzolan, typically have clinker contents around 50–60%. The combination of calcinedd clay with limestone allows higher levels of substitution down to clinker contents of around 50% with similar mechanical properties and improvement in some aspects of durability. The replacement of clinker with limestone in these blends lowers both the cost and the environmental impact. Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC 3 ) The use of Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) has a huge potential to reduce carbon emissions and virgin resource consumption in cement production, especially for developing countries. However, the limited supply of SCMs in many countries or regions is an obstacle to wider use. Today > 80% of SCMs used to reduce the clinker factor in cement are either limestone, fly ash or slag. Calcinedd clays, particularly in combination with limestone (LC 3 technology) have tremendous potential to extend the use of supplementary cementitious materials as a partial replacement of clinker in cement and concrete. Limestone Calcined Clay Cement (LC 3 ) are blended cements that combines clinker, limestone, calcinedd clay and gypsum. They take advantage of high reactivity of calcinedd clay and the synergic reaction between limestone and clay offering equivalent mechanical performance to normal Portland cement with clinker factors down to 50%. LC 3 constituents Fine limestone is commonly used in OPC based materials. It has also been established that limestone additions up to around 5% can react
