Cement, Energy and Environment

The last session MAPPING THE LOW CARBON FOOTPRINT JOURNEY IN THE INDIAN CEMENT INDUSTRY started at 5.15PM a er refreshment & networking break. The Low Carbon Roadmap - status review report for the Indian Cement Sector since the release of Low Carbon Roadmap of Indian Cement Industry(released in 2013) dealing with the progress that have been achieved, was released in this session. Mr Jamshed Cooper(MD, Heidelberg Cement India, Limited & Zuari Cement Limited & Chair, CSI in India) started off by saying that India has the poten al in achieving the target of keeping the temperature below 2C much earlier due to its past performances( in terms of heat/power consump on or emission standards). He also emphasized that awareness about environment(Sri Lanka asking for PP cement bags re- usage plan) is gradually developing with CSR ac vi es shi ing from 'greening of villages' to 'greening of environments' & with nanotechnology people are preparing products that absorb CO (e.g. TiO cements). Mr 2 2 Philippe Fonta(Managing Director, Cement Sustainability Ini a ve, World Business Council for Sustainable Development) divulged that CSI success depends upon 5 elements like crea on of project format in 1999 for WBCSD, vision forma on with relevant CEOs, mission collabora on, protocol crea on & ending with the roadmap development. He stressed that for individual companies the S.I costs are too high (as price of carbon is 30-40 USD/ton) & compe ve to get carbon credits so proper an cipa ve planning is must along with the fact there remains certain key challenges regarding how to become carbon neutral for a 2 world if not 1.5,by adop ng new materials(like LC ) 3 or technologies(like CCU/CCS). 77
