by artificial recharge which otherwise is lost to surface runoff. This artificial recharge mechanism which is a synonymous phenomenon of replenishment of groundwater resources is conducive to transforming the surface water into existing aquifer system within prevailing hydrogeological environment (Curtis 1998). Such augmentation will not only control the decline of water levels in parts of Durg but will also reduce the surface runoff which chokes the storm drains. Further, it will reduce the soil erosion and will increase the availability of water. Table 7 and Table 8 indicate the characteristics of water before and after the implementation of the rainwater harvesting system. With encouraging results from the present experimentation, it is recommended that the scheme be extended for implementation in the surrounding villages as well as in the cities where large rooftop surface area will be available to conserve rain water so that it could be tapped judiciously when needed. 7
