Cement, Energy and Environment

CPCB study argues that when it comes to carbonyl emissions, CNG is worse than a "dirty" fuel like Bharat Stage II diesel. Carbonyls are a class of chemicals that range from harmless acetic acid (vinegar) to suffocating formaldehyde. Some of them have been shown to be linked to cancer after prolonged exposure. I Waste to Wealth & Recycling j CEMENT USE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PURPOSES: HAZARDOUS WASTE TREATMENT Giiray SALiHOGLU, Gizem KARACA, Vedat PINARLI Uluda• University, Environmental Engineering Department, Bursa, Turkey Applicability of cement and cement manufacturing process for the treatment of hazardous wastes from certain industries were investigated in this study. In the first part of the study, cement was used as a binder to treat waste phosphate sludge from automotive industry and electric arc furnace dust from steel foundry. The hazardous characteristics of the resulting products were examined. Waste oils and tires from automobile industry were used as alternative fuels in a cement factory, in the second part of the study. The hazardous characteristics of the resulting cement were examined. The results of the study showed that cement and cement factories can be effectively used for environmental purposes, and Table-1 Chemical and physical properties of the cement and the waste materials Constituents P<; (%) WPS % EAFD (%) Chemical composition GaO Si02 AI20 3 0.59 0.57 Fe20 3 22.98 37.02 MgO 0.1 1 5.10 P20 s 31.70 0.24 so3 0.01 2.40 Na20 0.79 0.62 1<20 0.11 1.88 Cl 0.03 1.35 Zn 11.17 19.79 Ni 0.58 Pb 5.63 Ignition loss 3.76 11.56 3.8 10.5 Specific. gravity 2.6 4.0 Specific surface 3416 3406 1600 (cm 2/g) Cement Water Ume Acetic Acid Water HEAVY METAL: 'ANALYSIS (TCI:.P) Fig./ Experimental procedure for stabilization/ so/idiffcation phase 48
