They hav e lashed out against Bush for not effectivel y address ing the iss ue of g lobal warming and urged the President to rethink his decision of not signing the Kyoto Protocol the in ternational agreement to curb global warming. In a letter delivered to the White House, I0 Democrats and one Independent attorney from various states including New York, Ca liforni a, Massachusetts and AIaska, wrote that inaction by the Republican administ rati on had resulted in a confusing tangle of anti-pollution regulations passed by various states. The letter applauded the US state department's report issued in May 2002 which stated that rising global temperatures and sea levels are a threat to ecosystem and coast lines . The Attorneys have, however, criticised th e Bus h administration for not acting on the report. .. In the light of the report' s findings, we urge you now to rethink the administ ration's policy response to the problem,'' the letter said. A!though all the signatories are Democrats, the letter was not about politics, Attorney General, Thomas Reilly of Massachusetts ~ai el. He explained, ''This is about our envi ronment and our future." US companies will lose out to forei gn competitors that gain expertise and niarket share in energy-reducing technologies, and may face trade sanctions against US exports that are made at higher– polluting factories, according to the Business Council for Sustainable Energy, whose 37 members included Honeywell Internati onal Inc, Maytag Corp and Covanta Energy Corp. NHAl has c ited th e menace of accidents caused by vehicles that sudqenly veer into petrol pumps on highways, as the reason for the new guide lines. It has asked oil compa ni es to construct 5.5-7 meti·e wide service lanes from highways to the relocated petrol pumps. The guidelines propose that veh icles should be gu ided to petrol pumps through well-located signpo sts and acceleration and deceleration zones on highways. which would be built by the oil companies. Respective fue l retailers wo uld also be responsible for the construction of se rvi ce road s, channelize rs and drainage equ ipment as we ll as provide signs and markings at their own cost. To eva luate the impact of a coal washery project, an in vestigation was carri ed out in the Patherdih coal washery of BCCL (Bharat Coking Coal Ltd). The existing socio– economic envi ronmental scenario of the study area has been discussed and the methodology adopted has been described. Socio-economic parameters are analysed on the basis of cens us reports and a detailed househo ld que stionn a ire. The survey was carri ed out in core and buffer zones and the results have been discussed on the basis of socio-economic determinants.
