FIRF: ~AFF:TY CONCRETE W I TH Su1111110ry of /he lasl 111eeting held on 19. Feb. 2002 The Project Group 2.2, which has been working since March 200 1 on tire safety on concrete has lastly met on 19' 11 of February 2002 at Cembureau Building Brusse ls . Studi es of the gro up is mainl y focused on: fire des ign tool s of concrete stru ctures , s pa lling of special concretes such as SCC (Self Com pacted Concrete), HPC (High Performance Concrete), HOC (High Density Co ncrete) and im plementat ion of a com pute r prog ramme to be used for fire de s ign pa rt of th e concre te stru ctures. During th e last meeting the results of real fire test made on a one to one scale 2 - span 7 -story hi gh s treng th concrete buildin g in Cardington- UK has been discussed. From the test resu lts it has been observed that the overall durability of the build ing in cluding spalling effect is satis facto ri Iy good. A lthough the ma in prob lems generally pred icted to face with are the fa ili ng of the structure caused by the strain development on the members (beams, columns etc.) by temp eratu re c ha nge a nd th e corrosion effect after the fire, they have not been come across duri n" b or after the test. Wi th a quick repa ir the corrosion can be overcome to some extent, but the strain changes can on ly be minimized by using fire de s ig n and structural des ign procedu res together. The design tools for fire inc lud ing structu ral part have bee n prepared by the project group with th e he lp of exist ing codes ofdifferent European Countri es and it will probably be l~nished at the end of 2002. Project Group 2.2 has a lso been impl ementing a user friendly compute r prog- ramme for fir e design of concrete structures. Main pa rts of th e programme has been compl eted and remaining part of the work wi ll be the adaptation and traci ng of the tire design codes to th e programme. Compute r programme is planned to be fini shed at the beginning of the next year. Additionall y, in the meeting the tests carried out on spalling of concerete in defferent countries and the obta in ed res u lts have bee n di scussed. One interesting iss ue drawn from the test results obtained in Netherlands is that if the s iIica fume content is l i mit~d to 6% then the spalling effect will be negligible. To verify th e id ea, 3 different ex periments will be done in May 2002. The studies related with this subject are propaga ted by both project group 2.2 and project group 4.3 which is another technical group studying on ' Building Behaviour' . Fin all y, in the next meeting which will be held on 18 June. 2002, as wel l as the ongoing subjects one new concept called as fire safety of road tu nne ls will be taken in account. Strategies and the detaiIs ofthe project will be clarified during the meeting. CONCRETE : ASPI IALT : ~3 In a recent statewide pol l of Mi ch igan d ri ve rs on h ighway materials concrete eked out a 44 to 43% edge. Concrete was preferred beca use of its longe r li fe a nd durabi li ty and providi ng a safer ride in wet and cold weather. Asphalt was preferred for bei ng cheaper and offering a smoother ride. For new construction nearl y two - thirds of drive rs preferred concrete. Asphal t was the choice for repairing and repaving. F:OTSON AND HIS PATENTS Thomas A. Edison is known for his inventions in electricity and energy where he owns some 424 U. S. patents. On cement and concrete technology, he received 49 patents betwee n 1900 - 19 19 in c luding those on hand ling bulk materials. buring portland ce ment cl inker, rotary kiln, crush ing rolls. belt and bucket conveyers, mea ns for utilizing waste heat in kilns. ap paratus !"o r the produ ction o r concrete structures. MEETING ON LEG ISLATION FOR EXPLOSIVES The new le g is lat ion for explosives had become effective on May 23, 200 I and had all owed a transition period of three years for the ex istin g exp losive sto rage fac ilit ies to comply. Rece ntl v TCMB conducted a survey amon~ the member factories to find out the state of their preparations on this matter. The results of the survey were amon g the items d isc ussed in a meeti ng on June 7. 2002 attended by the rep resen tati ves 0 r the Ministry of Constructi on, member fact ori es a nd producers of explosives. Six factories are about to rece ive their construction permi ts while th e others are experi encing various diffi culties mainly due to the vague items in new legis lation. At the end of the meeting several lines o f ac tion we re dec ided upon to bring solutions to the problems. BRIEF NEWS FROM TURKEY 17'h International Congress of the Precast Concrete Industry was held in Istanbul on May 1-4, 2002. Altoge th er 6 1 papers were submitted by pa rt ic ipant s fr om eli ffere nt co untri es. Prof. As im
