INTERNATIONAL COUNTRY PROFILE, EVENT ETC. SUCCESS IN TilE GULF Gui(Cement Company, UAE Gulf Cement Co. (GCC) was established in the Emirate in 1997. The plant is s ituated at Khor Khwair, j ust 2 km away from the. port of Mina Saqar and adjacent to the large limestone quarry ofRas AI Khaimah Rock Co. The entire plant and machinery were supplied by UBE Industries Japan on a turnkey basis. Erection and commission ing of the single stream cement plant consisting of one silica crusher, two raw grinding mills, a kiln system, two cement grinding mills and a packing plant were also carri ed out by UBE Ind ustries who initially managed the plant for a period of 3 years. Only approximately 5% ofraw materia ls required for cl in ker production, consisting of bauxi te and iron ore, are imported. Superior quality raw materials wi th very low alkal i, chloride and magnesia content available in the Emirate, is the main reason for the high grade cement produced in Ras AI Khaimah and the concentration of four cement plants wi thin an area of approximately 2 km 2 • The excellent teamwork ofthe company's empl oyees, who have ove rcome a ll the problems associated with heating, storage, filtration and pumping this difficult fuel by suitable modifications and carefu l se lection of equipment. Introduction of petcoke as fue l is another ach ievement in the burning process; the company now has the capabi lity of burn ing multi fuel s (natural gas, fuel oil and petcoke or coal) in its kiln system. Dust emissions from stacks were reduced to less than I0 mg/ Nm\ well below the international limit. by repl qc ing e lectrostatic prec ipit ators with hi gh effic iency filter bag houses supplied by Full er Kovako. The company has also built a huge dome si lo to store 100 000 t of c linke r, whi ch apa rt f rom protecting the clinker from rain and atmospheric moisture, has reduced the emissions of dust still further from storage, handling and transpmtation. The silo was built by Dome Technology, and Cemag, supplied the materi a l hand ling equipment. In 1997, the company began an ambitious project to enhance its production from 1 to 1.25 million tpa by modifying the preheater cyclones, convey ing system a.nd clinker cooler. The clinker cooler was modified by introducing an JKN KIDS system for more effic ient cooling. Increased kiln output and increasing market demand for slag cement has necessitated decided to install one more cement mill. Consequentl y, it was decided to install one more cement -mill of 70 tph in addition to the existing two mills of78 tph . The new mill was to be specially used to produce high Blaine cement and to gri nd granulated blast furnace slag. Erection of the third cement mill was completed in May 200 I. One multi-compaJtment silo with three compartments with a total capacity of 5000t and an integrated high effic iency bl ender were a lso commissioned mid-200 I. This has enabled GCC to produce s lag cement with any slag cont ent acco rdin g to customer ' s requirements. Other add iti ons to the plant include four micro mills for grindi ng petcoke and coal, supplied by Fuller a siIica rock precrushing system by Svedala, and a cl inker pregrinding system supplied by Cemag. Cement from plant silos is conveyed to the loading plant silos via a 2km long belt conveyor runn ing across th e hi ghway. A unique feature of the loadi ng plant is its pneumatic ship loading system, which can directl y load cement in bulk into shi p's h6 Ids at a rate of500 tp h round th e c lock. Packing facilities include a rota ry packer and autol oader from Moilers, for loadi ng bagged cement into trailers. The packing plant al so has facilities for filling j umbo bags and bulk loading of road tankers. In add ition to sales in UAE, cement is expo rted to Mauritius, Sri Lanka and other Gulf countries.
