Thi s stud y gives an in sight in to some of the key aspects like physical potential, production techniques. utilization modes, safety aspects, and importuntl y, the broad pol icy– cum- planni ng framewo rk s governing the use ofethanol. For a sustainable ethanol fuel programme in Ind ia it is necessary to set up more pi lot faci lities and alter the ex isting BIS (B ureau of Ind ian Standards) srecifications, so as to all ow for an inc rease of ethanol blending from the existing 5% to I0%. To this end, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Yajpayee unve il ed a roadmap for making ava il abl e this powe r throu gh conservation. Unveiling the action plan, the PM told a FJCCI Seminar that his government would reduce energy consumpti on by 30 per cent in the next five years. To start .with, the PM said Pres ident APJ Abdul Kalam had agreed to anenergy audit of Rashtrapati Bhavan and similar audits would be carried out at the North and South Bloc ks housing key Ministries, incl uding the Prime Minister' s Office. Vajpayee also called for saving o f 20 per cent from the private sector and farmers. Power Minister Suresh Prabhu said the action plan provid ed a I0-point st rategy for demand-side managemen t. For this, dedicated cells would be set up in at least five states by September. Statin g that onl y about 160 MW of every I,000 MW generated is used in Ind ia, Prabhu sa id conservation effort.s could thu s reduce the amount that needed to be spent on adding fresh capacity. He snid at a time when the government planned to add I00,000 MW by 2012. a 25 ,000 MW energy conservation would help save up to Rs 150.000 crore. Prabhu said this programme must be followed in the form of a national movement. FCCI Chief R. S. Lodha sa id India used twice higher amount of energy that of the US and four times that of Japan for each unit of Gross Doiiiesti c Prm.luct. Effi cient use of energy would help Indian industry become globall y competitive.
