Shya rnav at i, the queen– consort of King Udayana, offered fi ve hundred garments to Ananda (the favourite disciple of Buddha) who rece ived these wi th great satisfaction. The king, hea rin g of it , suspected Ananda ofdishonesty and went to Ananda and asked what he was going to do wi th the five hundred garments. Ananda replied '"oh king, man of the brothers in the order are in rags; 1 am go ing to distribute the garments among the brothers. What wil l you do with the old garments? We will make bed-covers out of them. What will you do wi th the old bed covers? We will make pillow cases. What will you do with the old pillow cases? We will make floor covers of them. What wi ll yo u do wi th old floor covers? We wil l use them for foot towels. What will you do with the old foot towels? We wil l use them fo r tl oo r mops.
