It is he who IS responsible for the analysis, design, construction and maintenance of structures. He even works as an environment activist and develops environmenta l fr iendl y material s and techniques for the structures. The World Trade Center was des igned even to withstand the im pact of an ai rplane hit. The structural engineer had the insight that suc h a high building could be hit accidentally by an airplane. This was the only reason why th e stru c ture did not collapse immediately <tfter the crash. The effect of burning of the ai rplane fuel could not be taken into account. The in tense heat produced by the burn ing ofthe fuel caused the s teel co lumn s to me lt whi ch ultimately led to the collapse of the structure. These facts make people wonder how skilled and insightful the ta sk of a civ il engineer is. Though one feels rea ll y proud of belonging to such a community or civil engineers, it is sad to know about the probl ems faced by the civil engineer of today.
