The minister was speaking at a technical meet on oil conservation through improved road conditions and traffic management organised by the Petroleum Conservation Research Association, Eastern Region. Mr. Chakraborty said roads in Salt Lake are a case in point, "Whenever I travel in Salt lake I feel like crying," he said. He said some plans are afoot to improve condition of roads on which tram tracks are laid. The need of the hour is to pay attention to quality control while constructing roads. " Concrete roads in the city need to be constructed in such a way that they last for at least 50 years. Metalled roads should last for 10 years. Modern machiners will be hired by the government to fecilitate construction of smoother roads ", the minister said. Experts at the meet agreed that fuel conservation depends large ly on traffic management and road conditions. Courtesy: Cement News Digest, 19-25 Jan. 2002, Pp 14- 15 URL: www. cmaindia. But for most of them, be it in cities or villages, it is still a day-dream. Large-sca le highway development projects involving crores of rupees have been planned and piecemeal works has been done in certain stretches. India has a road length of 3.3 million km, whereas the National Highway Development Projects cover only about 15,000 km. The answer to how the rest of the Roads can be developed, given the economic, ecological and social constraints that the country faces, perhaps lies on a 113 km stretch of the East Coast Road, beginning from the outskirts of Chennai up to Pondicherry city limits.
