The plant Was formally inaugurated by its Chairman, Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy on October 22. This unit, set up at a cost of Rs. 325 crore, has adopted latest cement technology with profibus communication. It is equipped with two imported Gamma– Metrics bulk analysers to control the quality of crushed limestone, according to a release. PetroleumMinister Mr RamNaik announced that the government would permit mixing of petr~l with ethanol, a b y- product of sugarcane. Driving would become much cheaper all over the country, though the exact extent will really depend on· how the government chooses to tax ethanol. The government plans to allow blending of up to 5% of ethanol with petrol over two phases, spread over two years. No Changes will be required in any car engines. This decision comes six months after the government first set up three pilot projects, two inMaharashtra, the second largest cane producer, and one in Uttar Pradesh. Alf have shown satisfactory results, 300 petrol pumps have been selling this petrol, Mr Ram Naik said. The three existing pilot projects will now begin tests blending upto 10% of ethanol, after sorting out issues, including modifications of specifications of the Bureau of Indian Standards.
