lab, funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), fulfills the need for testing the energy consumption and effic iency of air-conditioners, refrigera tors, fans and tube lights among others. The new laboratory enhances CERC's ability to rate appliances for energy efficiency. Findings ar e released in i ts consumer magazine INSIGHT. MANAGING EMISSIONS Gerard Marchal, Ecotrade Overseas Ltd In the 2P 1 Centu ry, pollution con trol is becoming increasingly more important due to the expanding population and w ith the growing industrialization of newly developed countri es. For example, cement clinker production worldwide reportedly causes approximately five per cent of all manmade C0 2 emiss ions. By increas ing the eco– efficiency ofblended cements with granulated blast furnace slag, these emission levels can be significantly reduced and thus slow the effects of global climate change. Cement producers have to adopt innovatively to contribute to the reduction ofC0 2 emission by producing binders that include an important amount of alternative components, to reduce pollution and incr ease their potential. Taxes will increase these advantages for the producers. Among these alternative 40 CERC has influenced the Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) to upgrade electrical standards for irons, plugs 1 immersion water heaters, etc, and is now advocating with BIS to include energy efficiency parameters .for all high– energy consuming products in India.
