the Year 1996, even before the plant commenced production. This school is well equipped and is open to the local population besides the plant's employees. The plant management in addition offers scholarships to underprivileged and deserving students. The management indeed has expanded its involvement in this sphere throu gh construction of class rooms in and donation of furniture to the school of a nearby village and distribution of books, reading material, bedding, sheets, pillows to the Adivasi Boys Hostel. Commupity Development and Welfare- As part of this programme, as many as 43 borewells were drilled and hand pumps installed in the nearby village to cater to its drinking water needs during the last three worst drought hit years . In addition, about 1.50 lac litres of water is being supplied daily to Pindwara township on a regular basis. Some 650 blankets were distributed to the weaker sections of nearby villages. As part of the "Adopt a Village" Programme, the company has adopted Amli and Thandiberi Villages for facilitating the socio-economic growth of the area. At the national level, the Company donated an amount of Rs. 1.68 lac for the welfare of families of soldiers who lost their lives in Kargil. In the aftermath of the super-cyclone which devasta ted parts of Orissa an amount of Rs. 1.00 lac was contributed to the Chief Minister's Relief Ftmd to help the cyclone affected. Likewise in the wake of the Gujarat earthquake a 12-day relief camp was set up. Around 17 metric tonnes of food, and dothing and blankets worth around Rs. 11.80 lac were dislributed to the victims. In addition, a sum of Rs. 2.65 lac was also contributed to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to help the earthquake hit people. F. Energy Conservation The plant's efforts in this vital area of minimising fuel and power consumption are multi-pronged, e.g. maximising capacity utilisation, process optimisation and equipment/ systems modifications. Tables 3,4 and 5 summarise what the plant has achieved under these broad heads with details thereof.
