T he Second Seminar on Energy Co nservation and Presentation of the Fuller Energy Awards for 1998-99 were held during I0- II December 1999 at Grasim Cement Rawan. The event was organised under the aegis of Madhya Pradesh Chamber of Cement Manufacturers (MPCCM) and Fuller indi a Limited, and hosted by Grasim Cement, Raipur. More than 77 delegates representing the member units, cement technologists, equipment suppliers. eminent consultants and institutions in the region participated in the Seminar with enthusiasm. A total of 12 papers related to reduction in energy consumption were presented in the technical session by the member units, equipment suppliers and consultants. The Seminar was inaugurated on I0 December by Dr. A. Palit , Director (Tec hnical ), NTPC, Delhi . Shri G.K. Maheshwari, Jt. Executive President, Grasim Cement and Convenor of the Seminar and Standing Sub-Committee on Energy Conservation presented the Welcome Address. ln his Address. he underl ined, the imperati ve for taki ng all possible steps towards conservation of energy, besides utilisation of industrial wastes like fl y ash and slag. Shri Kamal Kishore, Executive President. Maihar Cement and Chairman MPCCM, pleaded for incentives from government for establishing captive power plant~ in the shape ofexemptionof duty levied on such power and exemptionofsales tax on blended cement for its popul arisation. Shri Kamal Kishore explained the background to the Fuller Energy Award and thanked Fuller India for their continued association and support. In his Inaugural Address, Dr. Palit stressed the need for improving the tec hn ology of manufacturing from the design stage to con ~e rve precious re~ources like elec tricity and coal. Appreciating cement indu stry for its energ y conservati on drive, he assured the industry quality power, and desired qualjty and quanrityof fly ashgenerated from TPCs power plants. Dr. Palit revealed that they are ork ing on a project of characterisation of fly ash to make it I00 per cent compatible for making good qualit y portl and pozzolana cement. A\\ ards Presentation The Fuller Energy Awards for the year 1998-99 were presented on I I Decembe r by Dr. M. Choubey, Principal, Engg. College, Jabal pur, Dr. I. Khanna Vice Principal and Dr. D.V. Prasad, General Manager, Fuller India. A total of 18 prizes were given away, comprising of 8 each in groups A and B 10 Energy Conservation Round-up and two in group C. Grasim Cement Raipur won the First Prize on overall energy conservation for 1998-99. while Maihar Cement bagged the Second Prize. Shri S.N. Jajoo. Executi ve President. Grasim Cement and Shri B.L. Agrawal, Sr. Vice President{Eiect.), MaiharCement received the prizes respectively, joined by their respecti ve team. Speaking on the occa. ion. Shri Jajoo, expressed deepconcern over the mounting power tariff and deteriorating quality of power made available to the industry. Besides, the quality of coal also was going down day by day, which was further compounded by marginal grade limestone. So, Shri Jajoo, called for a serious thought on reducing the industry energy bill which constituted more than38 per cent of the production cost. and also for conserving natural resources like limestone. coal and diesel. He pointed to the vast avai lability of cemenritious material s like slag and fly ash as wastes from steel and thermal power plants in the Chattisgarh region and said that their proper utilisation could reduce energy consumption.
