75 it was observed that putty application tool need to modify to not only save the time of applicator but also minimizing the variations in results of testing. Some Technical Error occurs during use of Putty blade (old tool) for Putty application which are as follows • Angle between Putty Blade & surface during application Application angle may vary accordingly when applicator handles the blade and due to change in application angle, thickness of putty also changes, and specific thickness of Putty can’t be applied in first & second coat every time by using putty blade. • Force Applied by applicator during application During application, applied forced change by applicator results in uneven putty thickness. • Waviness in application due to different types of putty Blades used Different types of putty blade used in putty application such as - Soft/hard & with /without handle. During application by soft Blade & without handle blade, blade gets curve and waviness observed in application. If applicator use Hard MS Blade for application then there is a possibility of thick coat application & not fill up the pores properly of surface, and putty thickness get more than as desired for testing in both First & second Coat . This type of application error can vary the testing results. Due to different types of blade use in application, putty thickness get change and this uneven thickness affect the quality of results • Applicator Way of application Application way of applicator also effect quality results as like some applicator do the smooth finish in top coat application but some of them don’t do smooth finish in top coat. This way of application can affect the quality of results. Putty Blade with wooden Handle Putty Blade without Handle • Putty blade size & thickness variation Different size of putty Blade & different thickness of putty blade also effect putty thickness and due to thickness variation, quality result can vary. • Difference between first coat & second coat thickness By using Putty blade in application the thickness of first and second coat of Putty application can’t be differentiated. Due to this thickness variation, results may vary. All these above various factors are the reasons which affect the quality test results. Development of New Applicator tool To Minimize these quality variation & maintain the thickness consistency during application for the quality assurance Paint applicator tool was purchased (size length 4” grooving 0.05, 0.1, 0.15 & 0.2 mm) which is regularly used for all paint application as like Hiding, thickness & other test (Applicator –ASTM D823 -18 Standard Practices for make Films of Uniform thickness of Paint, Coating and related Products on Test Panels). This Paint applicator used for various trial of wall Putty application. Then we started the Putty application by same applicator on regular basis with our regular practice by Putty blade. Its application was observed for 2-3 months regularly according to quality parameters and it was found that quality of putty thickness in both coat was more uniform & quality of results were also consistent by using applicator tool in comparison of our regular practice by Putty blade. After getting success in application, now the small size of Applicator was matter, so it was decided to increase size & thickness of applicator. Then New Applicator tool was developed as per our specific requirement with help of our drawing dept. & local tool manufacturer (length 8”, grooving 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 & 0.4 mm) for wall putty application with Specific thickness. This is a new developed applicator tool and application was started by using this applicator tool on substrate in our Lab and getting uniform thickness and smooth surface every time.
