Dr N P Shukla, Chairman, Madhya Pradesh State Pollution Control Board, in his Special Address highlighted the efforts of Madhya Pradesh State Pollution Control Board in the promotion of alternative fuel utilization in cement plants and also mentioned about Madhya Pradesh being the first state in the country to conduct trials for utilisation of alternative fuels in cement kilns. A.publication on 'Manual on Energy Benchmarking for Cement Industry' was released by Mr N A Viswanathan, Secretary General, Cement Manufacturers' Association during the inaugural session of the Conference. The manual includes best achieved specific energy consumption values over a wide range of plant configurations. The manual also includes various best practices and latest technologies adopted for achieving lower specific energy consumption. In the Master Speaker Session, Mr N A Viswanathan, Secretary General, Cement Manufacturers' Association, shared the challenges & prospects of cement industry and also highlighted the role of technology related factors to improve energy efficiency levels and thus reducing the energy consumption. The Session included Presentations on producing fuel by using algal growth technology by utilizing the C02 emission generated from cement kilns by Mr H J Nielsen, from LV Technology Public Company Limited, Productivity improvement and optimizing asset management in cement plants by Mr Mathew Samuel, from Siemens Ltd, Advancement in clinker cooler technologies on recirculation of cooler vent gases in combination with waste heat recovery system for enhanced heat recovery by Dr. Thomas Weiss, from IKN GmbH. Mr Philippe Fanta, Managing Director - Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI) WBCSD, shared global best practices of CSI companies and on the collaborative work on sustainability initiatives as key business priority. He also stressed on the need for data/ GNR, and for NGOs also to know as to what exactly CSI is doing. Acknowledging and recognizing the contributions made to the Indian cement industry, Mr. H M Bangur, Managing Director - Shree Cement Limited was felicitated at the conference. Q~ Green 1 ement ' 2014 : In the CEO's Panel discussions that followed, Mr. H M Bangur in his Address stressed on the need of sustainability thoughts in business models and said that the Green and Clean business is profitable. Mr. Bangur not only emphasized on the positive growth opportunity for Indian Cement Industry in the coming years, but also expressed his views on resource conservation by promoting the manufacturing and usage of appl ication based cement and especially belite cement for low strength requirement applications using low grade raw materials and thereby conserving depleting national resources. He also shared his experience on various areas where Shree Cement is pioneering the concept of energy efficiency in manufacturing and adoption ' • ,.;j of newer technologies like synthetic gypsum production from exit flue gases in Indian Cement Industry. In his closing remarks, Mr. Bangur called attention to the need of increasing the R&D efforts by Indian cement manufacturers to achieve higher standards in manufacturing and product innovation. Parallel Sessions were held on WHR, AFR Technology, Mines & Mines Management focusing on resource conservation, environmental sustainability, best demonstrated practices, latest technologies and on concrete with focus on high performance concrete, optimal utilization, green buildings and ready-mix concrete applications. Chairing the session on enhancing mines life, Dr. S. K. Handoo, Advisor (Technical), CMA stressed the need for rational usage of the depleting natural resources/ raw materials, adoption of best practices to enhance mines life.
