.. PRODUCTIVITY AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY AWARDS TO CEMENT INDUSTRY Three cement plants received National Produ ctivity Awards for 1995-96 as follows: • Best Productivity Chetrinad Cement Corpn. Ltd. Perfonnance Award Puliyur, Tamil Nadu. • Second Best Gujarat Sidhee Cement Ltd. Productivity Sidheegram, Gujarat. Performance Award • Certificate ofMerit Shree Digvijay Cement Co. Ltd. Digvijaygram, Gujarat. The Awards were presented by the President, Shri K.R. Narayanan on 26 November 1997 at the National Productivity Council's Annual Productivity Awards Function, which was largely attended. Three Cement Plants received Energy Efficiency Awards for 1996-97 as follows : • • • First Prize Second Prize Raymond Ltd. Cement Divn, Bilaspur, M.P. Shree Cement Ltd. Beawar, Rajasthan. Certificate ofMerit Gujarat Ambuja Cements Ltd., Ambujanagar, Gujarat The Awards were presented by Vice President, Shri K.rishan Kant at the National Energy Conservation Day celebrations organised by the Ministry of Power, Government of India, on 14th December 1997 in New Delhi. CLINKER COOLER REPLA(;EMENT T he Cementos Apasco, Acapulco, Mexico Plant was built in 1966 for a capacity of 950 tpd dry long kiln. The plant was modified in 1993 to modernize the pyroprocessing system and increase production to 1400 tpd. A preheater tower was installed and the ki ln was shortened to accommodate the new precaJciner system. A new single grate clinker cooler, size 8 ft wide and 37 ft long, was installed to upgrade the clinker cooling system. The principal problems with the old cooler were: • • • Low secondary air temperature to the kiln. High clinker outlet temperature. Excessive maintenance and downtime due to damage of the movable parts including grate plates. • Unreliable mechanical grate drive with crankshaft assembly. • High grate speed and low clinker bed height resulting in inefficient operation. Replacement of Clinker Cooler The old cooler was installed underneath the kiln in the reverse direction, a counter current to the clinker flow.
