Cement V ikram Cement, a Unit of Grasim Industries Ltd., has an annual capacity of 2.5 million tonnes. Its three units, comprising Units I and II of0.75 MTPA each and Unit III of I MTPA, are located at Vikram Nagar in Neemuch district of Madhya Pradesh. The capacity of Units I and II (KIID make) was 0.5 MTPA at the time of their commissioning in 1985 and 1986'respectively, and that of Unit III (KP make) was I MTPA in 1991. With a view to increasing productivity and conserving energy, modernisation of Units I and II was done which enhanced their individual capacity .to 0.75 MTPA in 1988-89. This was done without affecting production. It involved the addition of separate 5-stage suspension preheaters for kiln string and mad~ in-line calcinator into a separate-line calcinator. Due to the steep increase in the cost of all inputs, over capacity in the cement industry as a whole in the country, competition in the market and globalisation, survival can be possible only through sustained efforts at energy conservation. This fact has been well realised and energy conservation made an integral part of Vikram Cement's work culture.
