Malaysia are all in the top 25 leading exporters' table and all posted export growth of 15 per cent or better in 2011 , " Lamy said at the Brookings Dialogue here. He said developing countries' share has increased to about 50 per cent compared to around 33 per cent of the global trade in 2008. Also trade as a share of the world GOP has risen from roughly 40 per cent in 1980 to around 60 per cent today. However, Lamy said that increasing use of non-tariff measures by different countries are impacting trade. "Governments are implementing a variety of NTBs which impact trade flows, sometimes profoundly," he said on October 1. These measures are regulatory in nature and are aimed at protecting consumers' health and safety, he added. They include standards, testing and certification procedures. "But removing these types of regul ations is often neither desirable nor politically feasible," Lamy added. The challenge before the WTO and other multilateral organizations is to reduce such discrepancies so that they do not conflict and unnecessarily restrict trade, he said. GROWTH OF MOST POPULATED CITIES TO (liD The fastest growing of the world's mega cities over the next 13 years, according to a UN report, will be Dhaka, which was ranked No.23 in 1990 but was already at No.9 in 2010, and is projected to be the fifth largest urban area in the world by 2025. Another city in India's neighbourhood, Karachi, has also been rapidly climbing up the rankings, from No.21 in 1990 to No. 10 in 2010 and No.9 in 2025. Kolkata , which was ranked No.7 in 1990, has been more or less holding on to its position, having dropped just one rank till 2010, and is projected to hold on to that position in 2025, New York and Mexico City, which were the two biggest urban agglomerations two decades ago, are projected to drop to the bottom half of the top 10 list in a little more than a decade from now. For those who worry about these cities continuing to grow to unmanageable sizes, there is some reason for hope. Most of the cities at the top of the list are projected to see their rates dropping. Delhi and Mumbai are both projected to see populations increasing by 29 per cent over the same period, but even this is a significant drop from the rates at which they have grown since 1990. "There is a need to address the ribbon development happening around big cities in developing countries, particularly in India. A city or urban area has to have adequate infrastructure to make them cities of prosperity," said Eduardo Lopez Moreno, head of City Monitoring Branch of UN Human Settlements Programme.
