Waste Heat Recovery Systems (WHRS) Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) works on the principle of converting thermal energy produced in rotary kiln and after quenching cooler (AQC) processes to power. Approximately 30%-40% of heat produced in rotary kilns and AQC is wasted without proper utilization and thus implementation of WHRS is a major breakthrough for all. WHRS has a potential to generate about 20% to 30% of plant power requirements, thereby, reducing purchased power needs. As per the reports of 2013, China tops in the WHRS unit installation globally in cement plants followed by India and Japan. According to IFC (World Bank Group) report, the existing WHR installed capacity is more than 200 MW in India and there is potential to achieve remaining 500-900 MW with an estimated investment potential of $1.4 billion. Key three primary WHRS available are as follows: i. Steam Rankine Cycle(SRC) ii. Organic Rankine Cycle(ORC) iii. Kalina-based system 23 Figure. 5 WHRS System Process Flow In India, SRC is a widely used WHRS for the cement industry. As per the reports of Global Cement, the total new WHRS unit capacity of Indian Cement producers was expected to reach 175MW by March’22. WHRS is an important method that needs to be adopted to achieve our mission of Net Zero emissions. 2.5. Carbon Credits The Government can start providing carbon credit points to the projects using blended cement as it will reduce the embodied CO 2 footprint of the project. Carbon credits can be termed as a market-based mechanism that shall allow companies to offset their greenhouse gas emissions by purchasing credits from other companies or organizations that have reduced their emissions. This creates a financial incentive for companies to reduce their emissions and helps to limit the total amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere.
