CEE April-June 2012

National Action Plan on Climate Change, includes a major research and development programme focusing on biochemical conversion of waste. The mission leaves the choice of technology to the urban local bodies (ULBs). Existing and upcoming projects Only five small WtE plants, with a total installed capacity of about 5 MW, currently operate in the country. Of these, two are pilot projects of the MNRE and the remaining are state government projects. In comparison, around 900 WtE plants using MSW are operational around the world. Of these, nearly 400 are located in Europe where the Landfill Directive of the European Union supports WtE and discourages landifill. It aims to reduce landfill of biodegradable MSW by 65 per cent by 2020 from 19951evels. In the US, there are 90 WtE facilities for processing up to 30 million tonnes of waste annually. Asian countries such as Singapore, Taiwan and Japan have also adopted WtE for MSW management. Japan Uses WtE to tackle 70 per cent of MSW. China, which converted only 2 per cent of its waste into energy in 2005, is promoting WtE to tackle its growing MSW and now aims to use 30 per cent of its waste for energy recovery by 2030.
