" " "' 2008 2009 Cement industry in the GCC countries has developed remarkably, in line with economic and construction boom in these countries, led by Saudi Arabia then UAE. Statistical indicators in these countries show: • Clinker design capacities increased from 34.4Mt in 2005 to 40.7Mt in 2007, then to 78.1Mt in 2009. Moreover, cement production capacities, which registered 39.9Mt in 2005, jumped to 91 .3 Mt in 2009. The Arab Maghreb Countries: • Actual clinker production increased from 34.2Mt in 2005 to 53 .7Mt in 2008 then to 61.6 Mt in 2009, increasing at 14.7 per cent on 2008 figures. Cement productions rose from 42.3Mt in 2005 to 66.9 Mt in 2009, at an average growth rate of 16 per cent. • Consumption rates increased at a growth rate of 15.1 per cent to reach 76Mt in 2009. Saudi Arabia comes in the lead of GCC countries in terms of cement consumption, followed by UAE. • Imports during 2007- 2009 were around 10.7Mt of cement. • Exports declined from 5.7Mt in 2007 to 1.4Mt in 2009, and this is attributed to the increase of consumption rates. • After the execution of current projects, whether through the construction of new plants or expansions in existing production lines, it is expected that design capacities would reach 117.9Mt of clinker.
