The most important characteristics of this industry during 2007-2009 can be summarized in the following points: • Increase of clinker and cement design capacities in 2009, at 10.1 per cent for clinker and 11 per cent for cement, as compared to 2007 figures. • Actual clinker production registered a growth rate of 10.4 per cent and 18.3 per cent in 2008 and 2009 respectively, as compared to 2007. The GCC Countries: • Cement production increased at 9.5 per cent and 20.8 per cent in 2008 and 2009 respectively, as compared to 2007 production . • Exports witnessed sharp decline from 9.2Mt in 2007 to 2.1 Mt in 2009; which is attributed to the rise of demand for cement in local markets of these countries; Egypt ·having been the leading cement exporter in 2007. • Imports ir~creased at 11 per cent, from 11 .6Mt in 2008 to 12.8 Mt in 2009, Iraq was the main cement importer. • Consumption registered a high growth, increasing from 59 .8Mt in 2007 to 72.3Mt in 2008, to increase again to 81 Mt in 2009 at a growth rate of 35.3 per cent on 2007 levels, and at 11.9 per cent on 2008 figures. Again, this increase is attributed to the rise of demand in local markets. Forecasts of cement industry in the Arab Mashreq countries show that there will be more expansions or building of new cement plants. In case the announced projects were executed, expected design capacities would reach 36.2Mt, which would raise design capacities in these countries to around 117.2 Mt of clinker by end of 2012.
