Cement Energy and Environment

• \ CENTRE TO SPEED UP FOREST, WILD LIFE CLEARANCES With 150 road projects requiring environment clearance in the next two years and about a dozen project already pending due to the tardy process, the Road Transport and Highways (RTH) Ministry has drawn up a plan to suggest a number of radical measures to expedite environment, forest and wildlife clearances. As the government plans to construct over 17,000 km in the next two years, it is bogged down with the prospect of getting environment, forest and wildlife clearances. It takes about 15 months for the ministry to get environment clearance, two years for forest clearance and more than three years for clearance related to wildlife areas. The ministry has suggested reduction in the time taken for getting clearance of new projects to a maximum of nine months. It has also suggested that the projects involving widening of roads be treated differently from the new projects. It has sought exemption from environment clearance if widening of a national highway was required up to 60 metres and for a length up to 100 km. The ministry has also prescribed a time-limit of six months for getting forest clearances which, at present, take about two years. It has also demanded that in case of widening projects, work in non– forest areas should be allowed. Courtesy: Konstruction Review, Oct. 17, 2011, P11.
